Building a Plan in Alexandra Park

Starting in August 2009, Toronto Community Housing staff and a team of consultants led by Urban Strategies Inc. began working with Alexandra Park residents to have a conversation about their community and what revitalization could mean for them. Alexandra Park includes the 263 townhouses and two apartment buildings that make up Atkinson Housing Co-operative and the Toronto Community Housing buildings at 20 Vanauley (Queen Vanauley) and 91 Augusta (Alexandra Park Seniors Apartments).

Preparing for revitalization: planning in 2008

A lot of important work happened in the Alexandra Park community in 2008. The Alexandra Park Visioning Committee was struck with residents of the community, Councillor Adam Vaughan and his staff, representatives from Toronto Community Housing, the Alexandra Park Community Centre, the Alexandra Park Residents Association, the Atkinson Housing Cooperative Social Plan Toronto and Toronto Employment and Social Services. The Community Social Planning Council of Toronto (now Social Planning Toronto) and tenant animators worked together to conduct a survey to learn more about residents' thoughts about the community. In December 2008, they presented a document that shared what they heard.

Revitalization planning in 2009 and 2010

The revitalization consultation that started summer 2009 is a continuation of this earlier process and gave residents, community partners and staff a chance to work together to identify what is great about the community and to see what things could be changed or improved.

Toronto Community Housing hired a consulting team, led by Urban Strategies Inc., to work with tenants, co-op members and staff to see how we might make these things happen. At the end of the process, we had a picture of what physical changes could support these ideas and we started to look at how we could pay for these possible changes.

Moving forward with revitalization: 2010 and beyond

Following many consultation workshops with the community, a preferred concept plan was chosen and a Master Plan for the community was created. In spring 2011, Toronto Community Housing submitted an application for a rezoning and Official Plan Amendment. For the latest information on the status of the application to the City of Toronto, please visit www.toronto.ca/planning/alexpark.htm

After the development application has been approved by the City Council, Toronto Community Housing will work with the residents and to start detailed design for phase one.
